The Huisman Honors Competition will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Nancy Volk Auditorium in Wabeno, Wisconsin, as part of the Wabeno Area Players Fine Arts Series. It is open to student musicians in parts of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan who have performed a Class A accompanied solo for the 2026 WSMA Solo and Ensemble Season. A minimum of 3 performers will be awarded scholarships ranging from a minimum of $500-$1,000. The recital is open to the general public.
Application Deadline: April 9, 2026
Each student must perform the music that they prepared for Solo and Ensemble. Students will be evaluated by independent music educators, who will select eight to twelve performers for the recital. While accompanied solos are preferred, if the accompanist is not available for the recital, students will still be allowed to audition. About Mr. Huisman and The Huisman Competition
The Huisman Recital is named after longtime educator and arts supporter Richard Huisman. Richard was a teacher, principal, and superintendent for the School District of Wabeno Area. As an educator, Mr. Huisman believed that young people should have the opportunity for a well-rounded education, including technology, athletics, and the arts.
The Huisman Honors Competition and Recital began in 2018, and other than a short break, it has been offered as part of the Wabeno Area Players Fine Arts Series every year. Over the years, the event has grown and awarded many scholarships that have allowed students to take lessons, attend music camps, and assist in funding their education after high school.
